Summary

This paper, entitled “Parallel Cities”, attempts to identify typical features in the way of perceiving and reading the Old City of Nafplio in two times – the past and the present. More specifically, it is investigated how cultural activity, buildings, and the set of urban factors shape the current perception of the walker, which elements of them were overlapped or lost and how in a later era they can be used as a basis for new ideas of intervention in the fabric of the city.In the first chapter, an extensive historical review is made in order to understand all the elements that were key factors in development and brought the city to its current extent and construction. In the second chapter an analysis of the current uses of the old city is made in order to understand how much mass tourism has changed the current experience of the walker in the city, overlapping activities and cultural traditions of earlier times. In the third chapter, the old city is examined simultaneously in yesterday and today through five elements: its routes, its nodes, areas, its landmarks and its boundaries. Arguments are made here regarding the timelessness of the architectural qualities of the Old City and a first position is attempted regarding points that should be considered, be studied from the beginning. Thus the interpretation of the city as a palimpsest emerges, that through the presentation of the photographic material we can read the importance of the activities and forms that were covered or lost in time and argue for the importance of bringing them back today. The main research question shaping the structure of the paper is whether a walker today can perceive the cultural heritage of the old town of Nafplion / the history of the town / the older form of the town in its present image?
