Summary

The integration and inclusion of people with autism, constitutes of a complicated issue due to the complexity of the disorder. With redefining the relationship between architecture and person in the spectrum, a proposal is being made for a different way of co-existing, aiming in inclusion.Subject of this thesis is the targeted redesigning of the spaces as a whole, and parts of them, in the Goulandris Foundation, aiming to cover the sensory needs of the visitors, focusing mostly on children in the age of pre-school. Primarily, an analysis is being made of the pre-existing conditions and quality of the Foyer space and the one of the children’s workshop. In continuation, the composite idea aiming in creating sensory zones in the aforementioned spaces and the “compartmentalisation” of the activities taking place in those spaces, is presented. In addition, small scale modifiable constructs are designed, aiming to broach the subject of the two “opposites”, adult and child, around the idea of furniture in use in the space. Namely the translation of furniture into a form of game – hiding place, while keeping its functional purpose.
