Summary

Architecture is defined by rules and variables that define the human body as a vehicle of experiences, able to be influenced and affected from the environment it is in. Subconsciously or not, we perceive the world around us using our senses as our primarily tool. It is that connection between space and our senses that is the defining factor of our experiences, emotions and of our psychological moods. What happens however, in the case where sensational disorders come in play? How much does the architectural design, but also the design of individual objects themselves, have an effect in that scenario? This research will introduce the reader in the notion of autism, by focusing on the characteristics of the disorder. There will be analysis of the relationship between architecture and an individual in the spectrum of autism, and the conception of space from that individual will be described. The question set and answered by this research, focuses on which are the designing rules that could be applied in order to create a balanced environment for such an individual, along with the ways in which such a person could be prepared prior to their entrance in a pre-established space. From the overall space, this analysis will also focus on a specific location, introducing the notion of a hiding place, and examines its role in interactive constructions. Finally, it analyzes the properties and the therapeutic approach of product design in the context of space perception.
