Summary

The Eye / Gaze Tracking - Documentation process has proven to be extremely useful for understanding pilot’s in-flight cognitive processes and is the research subject in the present thesis. For this reason, a suitable experimental setup was developed that allows the recording of pilot’s gaze data in a high performance, F-16 aircraft simulator. Along with that, an original, fast and user-friendly calibration procedure of the Eye Tracker was developed as well.Additionally, the calculation methodologies of two new indicators were devised by utilizing the author’s experience as an F-16 Flight and Simulator Instructor: Revision Interval and Level 1 SA Estimate, aiming to contribute in to the processing, interpretation and presentation of pilot’s gaze data. Furthermore, a software application has been developed that captures, analyzes and presents in real-time the students gaze data, so that they can be used by the instructor during the simulated mission execution, but also as a post flight, collective gaze data analysis for debriefing utilization, aimed to improve the training in flight simulators.
