Summary

Estimation of unknown parameters in models described by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) is a particularly important issue in the fields of engineering, as it is often encountered in corresponding systems. In this thesis, the theoretical background about ODEs, Gauss-Newton method that is used for the parameter estimation and the algorithm that results, along with the necessary modifications for the algorithm’s optimization, are presented. Then, a mathematical model developed in FORTRAN is converted into a corresponding one that is executed in the environment of MATLAB. Code is added to the model, which creates graphs that show the course of convergence of the estimated model with the experimental data. Also added is code that calculates basic statistical computational expressions for the parameters. Finally, two specific applications with real experimental data (Pyrolytic Dehydrogenation of Benzene to Diphenyl and Triphenyl & Catalytic Hydrogenation of 3-Hydroxypropanal (HPA) to 1,3-Propanediol (PD)) are executed and their results are analyzed, numerically and graphically.
