Content SummaryThe growth of directed radial cracks originating from diametrically opposite notches in a blasthole, is analyzed. The cracks are considered to be composed from a traction free portion and a microcracking zone where cohesive forces act. A preliminary energy balance approach showed that the length of this zone has an effect on the blast results. Subsequently, a coupled non-linear displacement discontinuity model was applied in order to verify this effect. en
