Summary

The purpose of this thesis is to showcase the value of settlements with a historical character, to understand the problems they face and to formulate general principles and methodology for their integrated protection and sustainable development. The object of the study was the settlement of Polyrrinia. The cohesive urban fabric, the archeological site and the abundance of authentic elements of the local folk architecture keep alive the historical memory of the settlement. An analysis and study of the residential complex was carried out, through the recording of the age, the heights and the maintenance condition of all the buildings. After conducting on-site recordings in the settlement, the constructional and morphological elements of the buildings of the settlement were identified, as well as their differences from the past to the present. in order to understand the stages of the public space development, the identification of the urban fabric and the characteristics of the public space took place, such as squares, plateaus, paving, networks and urban equipment. The current situation in Polyrrhenia reveals the urgency of the issue of preserving historic sites and traditional settlements in a world that is constantly evolving. The purpose is forming a general reflection which raises the following questions: Can the preservation of settlements be limited to the protection of their morphological elements? Through which institutional framework will the local community be able to be activated and sensitized? As observed in the conclusions of this work, the mobilization of citizens and cooperation with competent bodies can and must provide valid and effective solutions to the current problems facing our cultural heritage.
