Summary

BIM models provide information-rich repositories for receiving static building information that includes geometric configuration and material properties. This information might not be directly usable for the generation of thermal simulation models due to the absence of 2nd level boundary information. In this paper a three-step methodology for a (semi-)automated generation of thermal simulation models is presented which includes: a query on the building data model requesting geometry-related information, a processing of the que- ried data by the Common Boundary Intersection Projection (CBIP) (a 2nd level boundary identification process) and an assembly stage of a thermal RC-model of the building based on the processed geometric and material data. The proposed approach is tested on a complex building with non-convex spaces. The performance of the resulting thermal simulation model is compared to an EnergyPlus model of the same building under the same boundary conditions.
