The environmental crisis has necessitated a fundamental re-evaluation of operations across numerous sectors, including the maritime industry. This sector is required to comply with international regulations established by competent authorities, with a target implementation horizon up to 2050.This thesis focuses on the comparative assessment of alternative techniques for improving energy efficiency and reducing pollutant emissions in shipping. Initially, conventional energy sources historically utilized in shipping are reviewed, alongside relevant regulations aimed at addressing these issues. Subsequently, the potential of alternative fuels and zero-emission fuels, though less commonly employed, is explored as an area of growing interest. In addition to examining alternative fuels, the study investigates other emission-reduction techniques focusing on optimizing ship energy efficiency. Finally, a comparative evaluation of traditional fuels, alternative fuels, and zero-emission fuels is conducted, highlighting the advantages and challenges associated with each category.
