Summary

This thesis examines tourist satisfaction in Crete through the application of the fs/QCA (Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis) method. Tourism constitutes a fundamental pillar of economic development in Greece, with Crete representing one of the country's most prominent and internationally recognized destinations. The island welcomes millions of visitors annually, and tourist satisfaction serves as a critical determinant in attracting repeat visitors and enhancing overall tourism development. The present study employs the fs/QCA methodology to investigate the conditions and combinations of factors that lead to high levels of tourist satisfaction. This method allows for the identification of complex causal configurations that are sufficient to produce an outcome, as well as necessary conditions that must be present for the outcome to occur. A central research question guiding this study is: Which combinations of factors lead to high overall satisfaction among tourists, and how do these influence their intention to revisit the destination or recommend it to others? While prior research has typically focused on individual factors—such as cleanliness, food quality, and infrastructure—this thesis extends the analysis by examining how these elements interact and how they influence tourists’ behavioral intentions. Empirical data were collected via a structured questionnaire encompassing demographic information, travel characteristics, assessments of the tourism experience, and future behavioral intentions. The analysis identified key combinations—pertaining to accommodation quality, cleanliness, gastronomy, and the natural environment—that are associated with high overall satisfaction. The findings offer valuable insights for the development of targeted strategies aimed at enhancing the tourist experience. Such strategies can contribute to the sustainable development of the island's tourism sector and reinforce Crete’s competitive position in the global tourism market.
