A methodology is developed for estimatingtemporally variable virus inactivation rate coefficientsfrom experimental virus inactivation data. The methodologyconsists of a technique for slope estimation ofnormalized virus inactivation data in conjunction witha resampling parameter estimation procedure. Theslope estimation technique is based on a relativelyflexible geostatistical method known as universal kriging.Drift coefficients are obtained by nonlinear fittingof bootstrap samples and the corresponding confidenceintervals are obtained by bootstrap percentiles. Theproposed methodology yields more accurate time dependentvirus inactivation rate coefficients than thoseestimated by fitting virus inactivation data to a firstorderinactivation model. The methodology is successfullyapplied to a set of poliovirus batch inactivationdata. Furthermore, the importance of accurate inactivationrate coefficient determination on virus transportin water saturated porous media is demonstrated withmodel simulations
