Περίληψη

A three-dimensional numerical flow andcontaminant transport model is developed to investigatethe effect of variable hydraulic conductivity onaverage mass transfer coefficients associated with thedissolution of dense nonaqueous phase liquid(DNAPL) pools in heterogeneous, water-saturatedsubsurface formations. Randomly generated, threedimensionalhydraulic conductivity fields are used torepresent a heterogeneous confined aquifer. Modelsimulations indicate that the average mass transfercoefficient is inversely proportional to the variance ofthe log-transformed hydraulic conductivity. A powerlaw correlation relating the Sherwood number to thevariance of the log-transformed hydraulic conductivityand appropriate Peclet numbers is developed.A reasonable fit between predicted and numericallydetermined mass transfer coefficients is observed
