Summary

During strong earthquakes one of the main hazards of geosynthetically reinforced soil slopes is the accumulation of permanent deformations. For this purpose, the current study aims at assessing the seismic response of reinforced soil structures, by calculating the seismic displacements via dynamic analyses of simple coupled single degree of freedom (SDOF) models. These models have been successfully applied in seismic slope stability analyses after being properly modified to account for the reinforcement. The impact of the flexibility of the sliding system, the stiffness of the geosynthetic material and the interface shear strength were investigated. The results of the present investigation provide a valuable insight into the sliding response of geosynthetically reinforced embankments.
