Περίληψη

The evaluation of the seismic behaviour of engineering systems consists of the determination of the impact, not only of the inertial distress, but also of the potential permanent ground deformations. As fault ruptures are usually followed by the development of significant deformations at ground surface, it is evident that the presence of an active fault in the vicinity of an earth structure may impose additional distress. Nevertheless, seismic norms incorporate provisions related mainly with the citation of geostructures. Since the location of large-scale structures (earth dams or embankments) depends on several criteria a site with an active fault may be unavoidable. The effect of a fault rupture on the stability of an earth structure should be carefully evaluated, as a potential failure may be related to severe socioeconomical and environmental consequences. The aim of this study is to provide an insight into the behaviour of earth structures subjected to permanent displacements due to a fault rupture at their foundation. The investigation is conducted by performing finite element analyses, taking into account the most important parameters affecting this problem. The results of the parametric study indicate that the permanent deformations resulting from a fault rupture in the vicinity of an earth embankment may be critical for the stability of the geostructure. Therefore, the accurate assessment of the impact of the deformations developed due to faulting is considered crucial for geotechnical design and should not be neglected.
