Boundary nonlinearities which can be modelled by means of inequalities and complementarity conditions, and which include static and dynamic unilateral contact problems are considered. A nonlinear equation approach is proposed for the numerical solution of the arising variational inequality problems. The advantage of this approach is that is permits the use of standard nonlinear equation solvers instead of more specialized ones, with an obvious enhancement in flexibility and generality of the resulting software. Numerical examples of waves interacting with unilateral cracks illustrate the theory.
