Summary

In the field of corporate evaluation a number of methods have been used in the past, to assess the performance and viability of the firms. A number of problems have occurred by the application of these methods. One of the main problems is the difficulty to adjust the methods used, to the qualitative characteristics of the firms. The discrete variables that are used to describe the firms do not always comply with the statistical methods used. Additionally, the number of parameters that affect such an assessment is very large and most of the commonly used methods are unable to take into consideration all of these parameters. Most of the methods do not have the ability to reform and adopt in all the features of the problems encountered. The present study proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) which uses the Multicriterion Q-Analysis with unified and separate slicing levels aiding method as an alternative tool for corporate performance and viability. It examines the usefulness of this method on the data coming from a Greek Industrial and Development Bank. For a sample of Greek firms a number of financial ratios as well as some qualitative characteristics were collected and analysed with the use of Multicriterion Q-Analysis with Separate Slicing Levels (MCQASSL). Although this is the first time MCQASSL is used for the evaluation of corporate performance and viability, the results are very encouraging concerning the effectiveness of the method.
