Summary

Roof pond variants are considered as one favorable technique for passive cooling since it is easy to build and the materials demanded are widely available. The number of roof pond variants exceeds are numerous :Covered/ Uncovered pond with /without sprays, Skytherm, Energy roof, Coolroof, Walkable pond, Wet gunny bags, Cool-pool Shaded and Ventilated pond. The above variants may have permanent, movable, embedded, floating or no insulation, shaded or unshaded. In terms of operation, some of roof ponds have spraying function, mechanical circulation, storage or winter operation. The effectiveness of these cooling techniques is usually assessed by the improvement of the indoor environment or the reduction of the cooling demand. Nevertheless, some extra parameters may affect the roof pond choice depending on specific conditions. For example the demand for winter function, walkability of roof, or cooling more than one floors can encourage or discourage an option. The present paper aims to summarize the parameters affecting a decision according to the particular cases or habitants requests. Thus, the present work gives the basic guidelines and the ability of making the proper choice of a roof pond variant in specific conditions or occupant's requirements
