Περίληψη

The main objective of the current paper was to study the effect of road transport on theair pollution levels in the city of Chania (Crete, Greece). The methodology used was based onsimulations and data processing related to air pollutants from the European Monitoring andEvaluation Programme (EMEP) database, for the years 2000 and 2003, as well as, onmeasurements of air pollutants using a multi-gas detector at different locations in the citycentre during traffic rush hours during the year 2005. The calculated road transport emissionsfrom the EMEP database for CO and NMVOC during 2003 were significantly reducedcompared to the year 2000. In contrast, the emissions of NOx, SOx and NH3 increased slightly. The calculated from the EMEP average yearly concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, SO2, PM10 andPM2.5 were lower than the upper limits established by the European Union. In accordance tothese data, the measured in the frame of this work concentrations of the air pollutants NO, NO2and SO2 were also lower than the established upper limits. Contrary, the concentrations of COwere at the upper limit at specific locations in the city centre.
