The evaluation of air quality has been traditionally conducted by ground based monitoring, through the use of manned aircrafts and/or satellites. Nevertheless, fast performing, comprehensive and cost efficient data collection is not always possible due to the complexity of the ground, and moving sources or physical barriers. Therefore Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with various sensors have been recently introduced for in-situ data acquisition, as they can offer new approaches and research opportunities in many fields. The main purpose of my thesis is:i. To visualize air pollutant emissions, measured through sensors located on UAV,ii. ii. Create a 3d visualization mesh of the acquired data andiii. iii. Visualize data on a geo-referenced 3d layer/model of an urban area or building. The sensors would be able to measure: Temperature, Atmospheric pressure, Carbon, Sulphur and Nitrogen oxides. The location of the investigation was carried out on the campus of the Technical University of Crete. This study also has the potential to be extended to areas such as airports, harbors and industrial zones. Furthermore, an application of this thesis was carried out as part of my practical training at the Mediterranean Institute of Chania, where the detection and the spread of the Tristeza virus was studied in a citrus crop (Appendix A).
