Summary

Computation contact mechanics are being found in many applications starting form structures and automotive industry down to powder metallurgy, food industry and pharmaceutical industry. It constitutes an essential framework for the study of materials that are in contact on the fact that provides accurate informations for their properties (i.e stresses distribution), thus plays a crucial role on design and production of end product or products that should undergo additional modication. The classical base for the treatment of several contact problems was provided from Hertz theory (1882) that delivered the analytical solution of the contact between two elastic materials.This diploma thesis aims to display the above theory by a) presenting its framework b) comparing results with its analytical solution and those coming form nite element software c) applying discrete element method to deal with contact problems and at the same time a new idea that extents classical theory will be presented.
