In recent years climate change has become an issue of major concern, essentially affecting people's life on several aspects. One typical example amongst others has been the impact on a wide range of business functions. On such basis there is currently an eminent need to design some new dynamic performance systems, which driven by an organization’s vision, will aim to implement the essential strategies to minimize potential environmental impacts. One such strategic tool has been the Balanced Scorecard, initially published by Kaplan and Norton in 1992, which has currently evolved into various forms such as Eco, Green or Sustainability Balanced Scorecard. In this thesis, I will address the potential outcomes from a presumed application of the aforementioned systems on a local irrigation and sewerage service. Main aim is to develop and deliver certain strategic tools that will achieve essential reduction of harmful environmental derivatives and promote sustainability for the public interest. The Green Balanced Scorecard design starts by defining the business targets followed by assessing the performance based on four key outcomes: the financial perspective, costumers’ perspective, internal processes perspective and growth & learning perspective of personnel primarily tailored to ''the green goals''. In order to assess the outcomes of above venture, the appropriate indicators are chosen to correlate with the original vision of the business. The Green Balanced Scorecard system, designed for the purpose of this project, is currently testing its potentials on the Local irrigation services of Chania, to confirm its integrity as environmental blueprint whilst assessing environmental targets on the specific institution.
