What is risk theory and how is it defined and used in operational models? The main aim of this dissertation is to study the basic elements of Risk Theory and to present the mathematical tools that support risk quantification and assessment in specific applications. Towards this direction, a review of the literature is firstly attempted on the theoretical background of this scientific area as well as on applications that have been proposed so far operational environmental models. In addition, a risk assessment application is proposed for a sea wave simulation model based on the time duration and magnitude of significant wave height over selected study areas. The data utilized are obtained from buoy records over the Pacific Ocean and the Aegean Sea as well as from corresponding simulations of the wave prediction model. The above application and the statistical analysis of the results are based on Matlab based algorithms - computational programs that were developed within the framework of this work.
