Summary

The present dissertation focuses on the manipulation of public opinion as a key problem faced by today's society. The term manipulation encapsulates, any deceptive or indirect tactic including persistent and serious pressure, especially psychological, intended to influence and change the behavior or perception of others. One of the most important factors of the perpetuationof public opinion manipulatingis the role of the media and, in particular,social media. More specifically,Twitter and the ways in which this platform creates a fertile ground to develop the aforementioned problem, with the birth and spreading of fake news are herein presented.In this framework, the role of Big Data and the techniques that mediate the manipulation of public opinion on an issue are presented. In addition, the importance of classifying large-scale data (Big Data) with the help of supervised machine learning algorithms,is highlighted. Finally, the center of interest focuses on the process of analyzing, processing andclassifying a natural language text, such as a tweet based on the writer's emotional load.
