Summary

The rapid evolution of technology has made the utmost to make aircraft so advanced that they become safer modes of transport. Millions of people use the plane daily for their movements around the planet, to the point that if we could observe the Earth from space it would be almost no different from a hive surrounded by thousands of bees around the clock. But while technology is constantly evolving and improving the reliability of all kinds of engines, minimizing the actual but not always foreseeable element of failure, the human factor is the one who statistically "charges" the highest percentage of liability in an incident or accident. For this reason, all countries worldwide have developed special monitoring, control, enforcement and regulation programs for all airline operators - people and means - to control and prevent events or situations that can develop into air accidents. So while this improvement of all kinds of "engines" involved in air transport is constantly improving, there is the human factor with its weaknesses, which often lead to the flight of an unwanted or tragic outcome. This is in addition to the findings of the committees setting up and investigating all accidents, and the measures they propose mainly concern measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. In recent years there has been a diversification of the whole concept of flight safety in general which relies mainly on preventions - provision to avoid an undesirable situation, instead of taking action after an accident. All this new philosophy focuses on "training" all the staff involved to become part of this concept to create a true safety culture in every airline and every airline. So, in this direction, every organization shapes its own safety culture, which is an ongoing dynamic process and should never be considered 100% to be considered successful. This paper presents a review of the existing literature on approaches to an organization’s organizational culture and security culture in an organization in general. This will lead to a framework for a view of the aviation safety culture and its particularities in the Greek area. The interview method will provide information from Aegean Airlines on how its strategy is developed to develop a safety culture and the means for its implementation by business executives. Emphasis will be placed on the means of overseeing all this effort and on the possibility of promoting 'organizational learning' in the company. Finally, the whole presentation will lead to many conclusions regarding the contribution of the safety culture to the safe conduct of air transport.
