The purpose of this dissertation is to record the effects of the activity of passenger ships in the port of Heraklion. Appropriate methodologies will calculate the gaseous pollutants (Sox NOx CO2 and PM) and their effects.Chapter 2 of the dissertation introduces the subject of the study, mentions the factors of air pollution and analyzes the effects of pollution on the environment and the ecosystem as well as on human health.Chapter 3 describes the gaseous pollutants that we will deal with, the types of fuels as well as the types of ships that exist in shipping. Finally, the effects of all this on shipping in general are analyzed.Chapter 4, after defining the role of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), attempts an approach to the main conditions signed by the organization for the protection of the marine ecosystem. Reference is also made to the actions of the European Union as well as to some regulations.In the 5th chapter we refer to the methodology that we are going to follow, presenting all those types that will help us to calculate the gaseous pollutants that were consumed in the port of Heraklion in the year 2019.In Chapter 6 this methodology is presented in practice as an example for a cruise ship that we have chosen at random and then we present aggregate data for the rest. A comparison is also made with the port of Souda for the year 2019 as well as conclusions are drawn.Finally, we tried to suggest some solutions to deal with the phenomenon.
