Performance standards play an important role in the operation of any company. They come from the job analysis, job description, job evaluation and other documents detailing the quantitative and qualitative elements of the work. All the measurable variables of interest are analyzed with the help of the "Key Performance Indicators" (KPI). KPI are tools for measuring the performance of specific individuals and activities within a company or an organization, or even the organization as a whole, in terms of the achievement of quantitative, strategic and operational goals that have been set. They are primarily used by middle and senior managers in order to evaluate the degree of success of individual departments. Through this evaluation, it also achieves a faster, deeper and more complete understanding of key operational functions, as well as broadening the control exercised by managers. For the most part, business success is interpreted as the progress of a company based on predefined strategic financial goals. However, success often also has the meaning of the degree of achievement, on a periodic basis, of other objectives that are parallel to the financial ones and are interwoven with the business culture, such as the degree of satisfaction of customers and employees. In this paper we focus on the maintenance department of a solid waste treatment and management plant. Solid waste management means the collection, transport, recovery and disposal of waste, including the supervision of such operations, as well as the supervision of landfills and the actions taken by traders or brokers. The maintenance department consists of thirteen people of various technical specialties, working in two or three shifts. Each individual is responsible for their immediate responce to any maintenance activity required to be performed, one object at a time, with the aim of stabilizing its present condition, prolonging its life and possibly restoring one or more of its important properties. To the pre-existing plant facility consisted of a few conveyor belts and machines, a number of new belts and automated machines (optical and ballistic separators) were added with the upgrading of the site, which work in parallel with the old equipment, increasing the collection and separation efficiency of waste, as well as the maintenance hours. The research that will be carried out aims, on the one hand, to investigate those factors that influence the setting of standards and, on the other hand, through appropriate statistical methods and other forms of data collection (such as interviews, daily work record forms), leads to the formulation of specific performance standards. The results that will be obtained will be of major practical importance for the evaluation of the work of the maintenance department staff, as well as, how the performance of the staff affects, either positively or negatively, the operation of the plant.
