Summary

In this work the flow field simulation inside the centrifugal compressor of a Micro Jet Engine (AMT Olympus) is described in detail. Firstly, the components of the corresponding compressor were measured, using a MITUTOYO Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), and then accurate digital models of the corresponding parts were produced, using the Computer Aided Design (CAD) software SolidWorks. The corresponding digital models were subsequently used to define the flow domain upstream, inside, and downstream the centrifugal compressor, taking into account the stationary and rotating parts, accordingly. A hybrid unstructured computational mesh was produced inside the stationary and rotating sub-domains, using the Beta CAE ANSA mesh generation software. The steady-state simulation of the corresponding flow filed was accomplished using the ANSYS CFX Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver, utilizing the Shear Stress Transport (SST) two-equation turbulence model. Specific attention was payed so that the inlet far-field boundary conditions and the outlet boundary conditions to be applied in adequate distances from the compressor. The simulation results revealed the details of the flow filed inside the centrifugal compressor, which will be used as a reference for a subsequent optimization of its geometry.
