The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore ways in which modern cities can become friendlier to their inhabitants, offering them a more sustainable urban environment with the help of technology and solutions based on nature itself. Initially, an effort is made to recognize and clarify the term sustainable city and then a bibliographic record of various new, old and smart technological solutions is presented to address the problems that modern societies face. All the above include urban farming solutions, water solutions and green solutions that use nature itself for the benefit of the city's inhabitants. In addition to all this, there is an extensive inventory of various proposals for urban policies that every modern city should implement in the effort to improve its sustainability, ranging from sustainable mobility and sustainable urban planning to sustainable water and energy management. Based on a large part of these practices and including the problems faced by the city of Chania, the last chapter proposes various realistic and feasible applications that in our opinion would bring practical changes in the transformation of Chania into a model of a sustainable city.
