Summary

A climatological and microphysical cloud analysis in central and northern Greeceis conducted in order to find conclusive evidence and results leading to the design of rain enhancement programs. Clouds are grouped in six categories according to precipitation characteristics and the related synoptic weather patterns. The results of the climatological cloud analysis indicate that cumuliform clouds are the dominant precipitation producing cloud types incentral and northern Greece with high frequency of occurrence during summer. Moreover, stratiform cloud types show higher frequencies of occurrence during winter months than in other months in the examined region.A microphysical cloud analysis was also conducted during several operational seasons in the National Hail Suppression Program (NHSP) of Greece. The microphysical measurements have attempted to provide evidence of the precipitation formation process and to delineate severalcloud features in central and northern Greece.
