Summary

The purpose of this particular thesis is to bring us all closer to the technology of digital twins and to the industries in which they are very useful and we meet them today. Several examples are presented from areas where a digital twin can be used and the advantages of its use and the benefits for each user are mentioned. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of them in the construction sector and more specifically on their application in infrastructure projects. The main subject of the work is the Aposelemis dam in Heraklion which has incorporated this new and rapidly evolving technology for the purpose of its uninterrupted and more efficient operation .With the collaboration that exists between the dam engineers and Prof. Stavroulakis as well as taking advantage of data that has emerged from an earlier thesis of Miss Bovolou, it was possible to use measurements at the point where the study was chosen. Then with the use of a suitable program, simscale software, a virtual network was created which works exactly like the real hydraulic network. In this way, we were able to determine the pressures that the specific section of pipeline receives and therefore we delved into the points that receive the most stress and are the most dangerous to show failures in the future. Focusing on the most dangerous part using a finite element model, material fatigue was predicted based on actual use. Therefore, in this way, there is the possibility of supporting preventive maintenance and early repair of the specific points in this section of the pipeline before any damage occurs that will affect consumers downstream of the network.
